Flatbush Zombies- Vacation in Hell
So much can be said about Flatbush Zombies sophomore album Vacation in Hell. It holds some of the Flatbush trio’s best work to date in all elements including instrumentals, lyricism, and tone. The group employs melodic hooks and choruses on multiple tracks that makes the record simultaneously able to be sung along with while also including heavy bangers. There’s a sinister element running through the veins of this project that tows the line between a dark memento to instability and a pride and optimism for the group’s past, present, and future.
The lead single “Headstone” is a well-constructed monster of hip-hop references. Jay-Z, Snoop, Biggie, Tupac, Eazy-E, Wu-Tang, and probably thirty more are all represented in an incredibly powerful four-minute allusion to the culture. The rolling snare and bass create the appropriately classic flow from each of the Zombies while the piano notes provide a darker atmosphere to the track. The Architect is in top form on every one these carefully curated instrumentals- “Leather Symphony” holds a beautifully gliding piano tone that provides a melancholic feel to accompany the potent lyrics.
Another well-crafted piece of the album is the collage of features. The nineteen tracks hold a great mix of legends like Bun B and Jadakiss along with some of the most exciting young voices in the game today like Joey Bada$$ and Denzel Curry. “Crown” even includes one of the best Portugal. The Man samples I’ve heard since fellow Flatbush lords The Underachievers’ “Amorphous.” While I’m on the subject let me just casually mention that we desperately need another Clockwork Indigo release and tour please!
All together this heavy project is another exciting step in the Zombies’ journey. The entire Beast Coast gang is on the rise, but Flatbush Zombies seem poised to rocket even further at any time. Be sure to check out Vacation in Hell on Spotify/iTunes and follow the crew to keep up with their touring and releases.
